Motives
- The Land Westward known as the Louisiana Province was land that provided more fertile soil and places to grow crops
- MANIFEST DESTINY! Expanding the religion and culture of the United States from coast to coast. The Louisiana Purchase would double the size of the United States and bring them closer to this dream.
- Once France had ownership of the land it took away the dream of the Manifest Destiny. The US planned on slowly expanding westward and once they reached the Louisiana Province then owned by the Spanish they would easily take it over because the Spanish were a weak force.
- France planned on creating and Empire in the Louisiana Province and the Florida’s. The French were a strong powerful power that threatened the United States. That is one main reason why Jefferson purchased the land.
- The intendant at New Orleans port closed the port to the Americas. Jefferson was furious thinking this was done under French order. But it turns out it was the intendants choice not the French or Spanish. Americans living in the West were furious because they depended on the port. They screamed War against France and Spain.
- United States wanted to become a World Power. To do that their government and country needed to strengthen. Part of becoming strong is getting bigger. The Louisiana Purchase would double the United States and it would greatly strengthen the Government.
- The French and Napoleon blocked the Americans from access to the New Orleans port on the Mississippi River. This port was very important to trade and commerce for the Americas. This was another big motive of purchasing the Louisiana Purchase.
