Lewis and clark
Meriwether Lewis was Thomas Jefferson personal secretary and was the one of the explorers Jefferson chose to explore the newly found land. Jefferson was a great frontiersman and also very intelligent. Lewis requested to have a man named William Clark be his companion on the exploration. Clark had skills as a frontiersman that were even stronger than Lewis'. Together they made a great team and will go down in history for being a major part of Westward Expansion.
Exploration route
Their exploration started off paddling down the Ohio River and then they camped out just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. Then they paddled upstream through the Missouri River. They traveled to present day Montana where they came in contact with Indians after following the Jefferson River. Over the Bitterroot Mountains they trudged and went downriver to the mouth of Columbia and then stopped in present day Oregon. Then Lewis and Clark returned to St. Louis by1806 to report to Jefferson their findings.
